Can Dogs Eat Ricotta Cheese? A Dairy Dilemma

I’m sure ricotta cheese isn’t new to you, it’s a creamy treat we all love to enjoy. But when our pup looks at us with those pitiful eyes,  many of us are tempted to give them some as well. Okay, so the question is: Is it all right for them to indulge in some of the cheese? Well, the truth is a little ricotta now and then, may not be harmful. However, it’s not the best snack your dog should be snacking on. Here’s why?

Why Ricotta Cheese Isn’t Ideal for Dogs

Sure, ricotta cheese has some nutrients but it also has drawbacks, especially for your pup. It’s high in fat and lactose and this can be tricky for dogs to handle. While a small bite may not cause issues, allowing them to eat too much can lead to stomach upset or worse. Let’s weigh the pros and cons to help you decide.

What are the benefits of giving your dog ricotta cheese?

Here are some of the nutrients your dog stands to gain if you let them snack on this cheese:

Protein: Protein is vital for keeping your dog’s muscles strong and healthy, and ricotta cheese offers a decent amount of it.

Supports Bone Health: Calcium is great for your dog’s bones, and ricotta cheese has plenty of it.

What are the risks of giving your dog ricotta cheese?

Here’s a look at the bad side of allowing your dog to indulge too much in  the ricotta cheese:

Tummy Troubles: Many dogs can’t digest lactose well, which means the cheese can cause gas, bloating, or diarrhea.

Too Much Fat: The cheese has lots of fats and over time, can lead to weight gain or even pancreatitis.

How can I give my dog ricotta cheese?

If you’ve decided to let your dog eat some of the cheese, then do it the right way to keep them safe and healthy. Here’s how:

    Keep it small

When it comes to ricotta, less is more. A small spoonful once in a while is fine, but giving it too often can lead to tummy troubles or weight gain. Treats like ricotta should be just that treat and not a regular part of your pooch’s diet.

Pick the right type of cheese

If you’re sharing ricotta with your pup, stick to plain ones with low fat. They are easier on their stomach and less likely to contribute to weight gain. Stay away from the ones with ingredients like garlic or onions

    Watch your pup for reactions

Just like us, dogs can be allergic to some food.  So if it’s the first time you give your pup this cheese, keep an eye on them for signs of stomach issues, itching, vomiting, or diarrhea. If anything seems off, stop feeding it to them and reach out to your vet.

    Wrapping up

To be honest, ricotta cheese can be a fun treat for your dog, but you have to practice moderation. While it does have some benefits, its fatty content makes it not the best choice for everyday snacking. So instead, go for the plain ones and introduce them slowly, keeping an eye out for any issues.

If you’re not sure about what to give your pup, check with your vet. They can give you advice based on your dog’s needs, ensuring they stay happy, healthy, and well-fed!
